DB orders Talgo 230 inter-city trainsets

GERMANY: Deutsche Bahn has selected Talgo to supply a new generation of push-pull trainsets to operate long-distance inter-city and international services, the national operator announced on February 5. 

Following an international tender, DB Fernverkehr has awarded Talgo a framework contract for up to 100 trainsets, placing a firm order for an initial build of 23 sets valued at €550m. Formed of an electric locomotive, driving trailer and an unspecified number of intermediate coaches, the trainsets will be designed to operate at a maximum speed of 230 km/h. 

The first Talgo 230 trainsets are expected to enter service from 2023. According to DB Fernverkehr, they will initially be deployed on routes including Berlin – Amsterdam, Köln – Westerland (Sylt) and Hamburg – Oberstdorf. Dual-system capability would be required to operate in the Netherlands, while sections of the other two routes are not currently electrified. 

DB had called tenders in 2017 for a fleet of new single-deck inter-city trains to replace its ageing fleet of loco-hauled stock used on InterCity and EuroCity routes not served by ICE high speed trains. The trains were to have at least 485 seats, and offer a similar level of comfort to the ICE fleet, while being suitable for operation in Germany, Austria and ‘other European countries’, including the Netherlands. 

‘We see an encouraging trend continuing, with more passengers than ever using our ICE and IC trains’, said DB Board Member for passenger services Berthold Huber. Last year, DB Fernverkehr reported more than 145 million passenger journeys, up from 142 million the previous year. 

Last September the DB board approved the procurement of another 18 ICE4 trainsets and 50 intermediate cars from Siemens as part of a €1bn fleet investment package which included the refurbishment of older trains. DB subsequently committed to further fleet expansion as part of its five-point performance improvement plan presented to the government on January 17.

Talgo selected for Latvian EMU contract

LATVIA: National passenger operator Pasazieru Vilciens has selected Talgo to supply a fleet of 32 electric multiple-units for suburban and regional services, CEO Rodzers Janis Grigulis announced on November 21. Formal award of the contract is expected to follow the 10-day regulatory standstill period.

The Talgo VitTal EMUs are to be delivered in 2020-23 for use on the routes from Rīga to Aizkraukle, Tukums, Skulte and Jelgava. This will enable the introduction of regular interval timetables with departures up to every 15 min in the peaks. Each of the 1 520 mm gauge EMUs will have a capacity of 450 passengers. 

CAF, Škoda Transportation and Stadler had also bid for the contract. Grigulis said Talgo’s €225m bid was the most economically attractive when assessed over the expected 35-year service life of the trainsets, taking into account maintenance and energy costs, being €20m less than the next lowest offer. The price includes staff training, maintenance equipment and the supply of spare parts for five years. There would be options for further units

KING Salman of Saudi Arabia officially inaugurated the Haramain high-speed line in a ceremony at Jeddah station on September 25.

The 453km line connects the holy cities of Mecca and Medina via Jeddah and King Abdullah Economic City, with a short branch serving King Abdul Aziz International Airport in Jeddah, the principal point of entry for Hajj pilgrims.

Guests at the inauguration ceremony included Spain’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Mr Álvaro Iranzo, Saudi Railway Organisation president Dr Rumaih Al-Rumaih, the president of the Spanish High-Speed Mecca Medina Commission (CEAVMM), Mr Jorge Segrelles, and Mr Carlos Oriol, chairman of rolling stock supplier Talgo.

Mecca’s high-speed station is located in the district of Rusayfah at the entrance to the holy city and about 4km from the Holy Mosque.

“The journey between the Haramain [two holy mosques] is now shorter and easier than at any time before,” transport minister Dr Nabil al-Amoudi said at the opening ceremony. “The project highlights the kingdom’s commitment to serving Islam and Muslims.”

Talgo Inc. is Shortlisted to Participate in VIA Rail Request for Proposal for Quebec City-Windsor Corridor Fleet

Seattle, WA – VIA Rail Canada announced on June 18, 2018 that Talgo, Inc. is one of the four trainset manufacturers shortlisted to participate in the Request for

Proposal (RFP) to manufacture a new fleet of 32 inter-city trains for the Quebec City-Windsor Corridor.

Talgo was one of the proposers who submitted a response to a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) issued by Via Rail on April 16. VIA Rail evaluated participant’s applications based on financial capabilities, concept product,

technical quality and conflict of interest. Qualified companies will have until October 5, 2018 to submit a proposal. Via Rail intends to have the new trainsets in service starting in 2022.
