Talgo and Renfe refit high-speed trains to carry coronavirus patients

SPANISH national operator Renfe is working with Talgo to adapt Talgo 250 Dual high-speed trains into hospital trains capable of transferring patients affected by the coronavirus around Spain if needed, following instructions from the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda.

Talgo says it has voluntarily made all its staff and material resources available to the Spanish government to convert trains into mobile ambulances.

The trains selected by Renfe are low-floor with step-free entry, which will facilitate the transfer of patients and speed up transport. The trains, which are being adapted at Renfe and Talgo’s joint facilities in Fuencarral, Madrid, also have modular interiors which facilitates sanitation, the dismantling of elements and the anchoring of sanitary equipment.

The variable-gauge bogies and hybrid drive will also enable the fleet to access both the standard-gauge high-speed and broad-gauge conventional networks.
